Our eyebrows are one of the most important structures that determine our expression. In conveying our emotions, we often make use of our facial expressions by changing the shape of our eyebrows. Eyebrows with raised inner parts express surprise, frowning eyebrows express anger and sadness, outer part raised eyebrows express a feminine charm, straight eyebrows close to the eyes express masculine attractiveness. If the women have the outer parts higher than the inner parts and curved eyebrows this adds 1/3 of the charm to the gaze. For women, it is desirable that the inner parts of the eyebrows are at the level of the bone structure located on the ceiling of the eyeball socket, and the outer part is approximately 1 cm above this bone structure. For men, eyebrows that are less curved and match the bone structure in the upper eye socket add a mysterious and attractive expression.

Eyebrows are one of the most shape-shifting structures according to fashion. Periodically, women used their eyebrows in various shapes such as round, thin, thick, curved, natural, highly shaped, straight, short, long. However, in no period, women’s eyebrows were never loved in the lower position, they were always tried to be lifted up. The wider the brow-eye distance, the larger the eyes and helps us to be perceived as distinct and younger. It also makes it easier to apply eye makeup. Care should be taken as the inner parts are too high can cause confused looks.

What is Eyebrow Lift Surgery?

Eyebrow lift surgery is the process of repositioning the eyebrows that have a short brow-eye distance congenitally or that have been displaced downwards with the effect of time, in the appropriate position by surgical or minimally invasive methods.

Who Is Eyebrow Lift Surgery Suitable For?

Eyebrow lift surgery can be performed to healthy individuals over the age of 18 who are not satisfied with the position of their eyebrows and who can undergo general and/or local anesthesia.

How Is Eyebrow Lift Surgery Performed?

Brow lift can be done with Botox application in its simplest form. If there is an aged appearance due to tissue insufficiency and the melting of the fat pads under the eyebrows, it can be supported with filling. Eyebrows can be repositioned with fusible and non-melting threads. The procedures so far are usually performed with topical or local anesthesia.

Brow can be fixed to a higher position by moving it together in both deep and superficial planes with 2 incisions of approximately 4 cm each, which is called temporal eyebrow lift, entered through the hair in the temple area or from the hairline. This procedure is done under general anesthesia. Since the anatomical course of the nerve that moves our eyebrows is studied very closely, there is a risk that the nerve will be permanently affected. If this effect is one-sided, it is inevitable that an asymmetrical image will form. It should be kept in mind that although the nerve affected is usually temporary, and it can be permanent.

In the deep plane, forehead and eyebrow lifting can also be done endoscopy. For this, the operation is performed by entering 3-5 separate incisions in the hair. The benefit of the endoscopic approach is that it provides the surgeon with a better visual field and a less visible scar to the patient.

For people who may be worried about the scar, the ‘gliding eyebrow lift’ method, which is applied in the superficial plan and will cause the least discomfort to the facial nerve leading to the muscle that raises the eyebrow, can also be preferred. In this operation, approximately 1 cm incisions are made from 3 different points, and the skin is completely released from the underlying tissues with the help of special surgical equipment. The eyebrow is positioned in its new position to be removed and fixed in its new place with many stitches, also called mesh method, from the outside. These sutures are removed after approximately 48 hours. Although it causes a frightening appearance until the stitches are removed, in recent studies it has been shown to be an effective method, although it is performed on a superficial plan. Of course, not every patient is suitable for this procedure. It will not be beneficial for people with severe skin excess. The aforementioned procedures are mostly performed under general anesthesia.

The patients who are older and have prominent forehead lines, usually male patients, it may be preferable to make an incision directly over the eyebrow, remove the excess skin and position the eyebrow higher.

Brow lift is a difficult operation with a high risk of drooping of the eyebrow, and patient expectations are very high. If the eyebrows take their old position or become asymmetrical, re-operation may be required for correction. Although it is thought that the most effective and permanent methods are eyebrow lifting procedures applied in more than one plan, there are those who argue that satisfactory results are achieved with methods such as thread and ‘gliding’.

After the operation, significant edema and bruising are observed around the eyes and on the upper face. In about 10 days, this edema and bruise will decrease by moving downwards. However, it should be kept in mind that the eyebrows will take their final position in the 3rd month at the earliest, especially in deep plane interventions.

If the operation is performed under general anesthesia, if the process proceeds normally, the patients are usually followed in the hospital for 1 night and discharged the next day. Depending on the surgical method used, the use of drains may be preferred. If the incoming fluid is low, it will be withdrawn during discharge. If permanent skin sutures are used, they are removed after 7 days. The scars on the skin will fade in a period of 6 months – 1 year. The scars are aimed to be less obvious by trying to place them in the hair or in the natural anatomical transition areas. Due to the existing edema, the eyebrows will appear slightly higher than their permanent position, and after about 3 months, the eyebrows will settle into their permanent position.

Upper eyelid aesthetics is the most common procedure performed together with eyebrow lift. The forehead, eyebrows and upper eyelids are considered as a single anatomical structure and if necessary, all of them can be intervened.

It should be noted that the applications made with Botox and fillers will be temporary. In the applications made with thread, after a while, there is a loosening in the tissue and the eyebrows may move downwards a little.

Why is Eyebrow Lift Surgery Performed?

Eyebrow lift Surgery is applied to widen the eyebrow-eye distance by positioning the eyebrows in a higher position. As a result, it is aimed to achieve more effective, dynamic, mysterious and attractive looks. Make-up patients can apply eye make-up more easily and effectively. In addition to eyelid aesthetics, eyebrow positioning can be applied for patients with drooping and agglomeration in the upper eyelids. After the upper eyelid aesthetic, the eyebrows will end up as compensatory and the eyebrows will move downwards a little.

What are The Non-Surgical Eyebrow Lift Methods?

The simplest form of eyebrow lifting is to lift the eyebrows with Botox. The eyebrows can also be lifted by supporting the eyebrows from below with filling. Suspension can be made with permanent and temporary ropes. A limited eyebrow lift can be applied while performing upper eyelid aesthetics. During forehead lift, eyebrow lifting can also be applied. The outer part of the eyebrows can be lifted by incisions from the outer parts of the temple area, from the inside of the hair or at the level. Brow lift can be performed endoscopy or with very small incisions. Especially in male patients who are older and have prominent mimic lines on their face, eyebrow lifting can be performed by making an incision over the eyebrow and removing the skin.
